Jobless
From the “About” section of this blog:
I am a graduating senior at the Ohio University E.W. Scripps School of Journalism in Athens, Ohio, where I serve as editor of the student-run daily, The Post. In four years, I’ve been a copy editor, staff writer, desk editor, managing editor and editor in chief of The Post. Under my direction, The Post launched a new Web site last month. I have completed internships at two Ohio dailies: The Columbus Dispatch and the Springfield News-Sun.
Also, I’m jobless.
Perhaps that doesn’t make me special. After all, more reporters are being laid off than hired. It’s hard to swallow, though, that I did everything right and still can’t land that first gig.
This blog will chronicle the adventures of one graduating journalism student trying to break into this media business. I plan to give my most honest, no-holds-barred account of looking for a job in media during the worst economic downturn in my lifetime. This is my medium — I am reporter, editor and publisher. I don’t need to explain how dangerous that is, but at least I can’t be laid off.
As one reporter I worked with wrote me: “Make damn sure you never quit yelling, even if they take your outlet away. You have a right, and responsibility, to be mad as hell and not take it anymore. Stand up for those who know not what they do — or don’t.”
I plan to do just that.
